Giveaway Winner and Burlap Cutlery Bag Tutorial

Congratulations to Suze for winning the Goldilocks pattern, below, from my recent giveaway. The Ho Ho Ho blog hop is over, but we're left with tons of ideas for the Christmas season. Those of us who participated have some of our decorating and gift ideas already done!
               
 Some of you have asked for a tutorial for making the simple little cutlery bag. Sugarplum, my Christmas kitty, insisted on showing you all the steps, so I let her. When you see how easy this is, you'll say, "Oh, of course! How simple!!"

1. Cut a rectangle from your burlap that is 4 1/2" x 7 1/2". At one short end, zig zag across the end of each piece  (about 1 1/2" from the top) using contrasting thread.  Round off the bottom corners at 

the other end.  Sew two long sides, starting at the zig zag stitch at the top, going around the rounded bottom, and ending at the zig zag stitch on the other side\. Reinforce with a zig-zag stitch. Pull threads out at the top to leave a fringed edge.

2. Turn inside out.

3. Press well.

4. Place cutlery in the bag and tie with a gingham ribbon to hold them in. Put a candy cane in the ribbon for a little extra pop of color!

 5. All finished!

 (This little bear placemat will be a PDF pattern as soon as our computer issues are sorted out! Yes, we're on computer number 3! I have two computers to send back right now and another one coming. They arrive with issues! We're talking EXPENSIVE computers, too. This is getting frustrating, to say the least! My husband has talked to Dell support lately more than he's talked to me! Before long he'll adopt an Indian accent!  If any of you work for Dell, I'd be happy to do an honest review if you can just get me a free working computer delivered to my house! :-) We've been without a computer since June because of this.)

Ho Ho Ho and Beary Christmas!!

"Beary Christmas!" and Welcome to the Ho Ho Ho Blog Hop! Today I want to show you some things I made for this hop that I think will work nicely for a cookie swap or maybe a children's Christmas party. The bear family was the first thing I made for the hop. I used the book, Sue Dolman's Book of Animal Toys.

Instead of fur, I used tan fleece for my bears.

I made a burlap and gingham bunting to put in the window area of my breakfast nook. 

 Then I made a burlap tablecloth for my 4' x 8' breakfast table. I used flat felled seams along two sides to widen it and sewed a gingham binding on the edges. (Whew! I hand sewed it after turning it to the back. Not easy on burlap! It "saws" your thread in half as you sew.)

I used a wreath and a few Christmas items to add to my setting....

...and added some wide gingham ribbon to the center of the table for extra color. My burlap had a nice Christmas pattern stamped on it, but I wanted more of the red.

Because I want to use this table as a serving table, I also made placemats and cutlery bags for my guests, who would be sitting in the dining room.

The front of the placemat is burlap with a gingham binding. I made the cutlery bags of burlap and fringed the tops. A gingham ribbon ties at the top to keep the cutlery in. (I tucked a candy cane under the ribbon.) The little stuffed bear is attached with hook and loop tape and can be removed. The cloth dinner napkin is looped through the bear's arms and is buttoned to itself to hold it on. It is large enough that a child can leave it attached and still put it in his lap. (This was my own design. We have a LOT of nieces and nephews in the family who would enjoy this and I thought they were cute with the stuffed bears!)

At the last minute I decided to hang my Who's Been Eating My Porridge? (Goldilocks) quilt over one window to give more of the Three Bears feel. (You can't see very well, but three bears peek down at her from the top of the quilt.)
So I'm set for a really fun Christmas party! For this hop I made the bunting, the tablecloth, placemats, cutlery bags, and the stuffed bear family.

Have you noticed all the burlap you're seeing in home decor? Well, there is a trick to cutting and sewing it. 

1. Make a snip where you want to start your cut. 

2. Find a thread beside the cut and start pulling that thread. In burlap it will be thick enough that this is not too hard to do.

 

3. Continue pulling, moving your hold on the thread close to the fabric each time. If the thread breaks, simply find the end and continue.

4. After pulling the thread completely out, simply cut in the void that was left. 

 Now, that didn't really show you very much of my project, did it? Burlap is only a small part of it. So be sure you check on August 8 to see what I have done! I think it will put a smile on your face.
                                                                  

An Old Quilt Revisited - AND A GIVEAWAY!

 
 

While visiting my west coast kids, I photographed a quilt I made for my granddaughter about 8 years ago. I made it in a hotel room during a two month stay in Denver, Colorado. It was snowing outside, I didn't have a car (my husband had it and was gone most of every day). I bought a tiny little Janome sewing machine on sale and I sat in the room and sewed. Quilters will find a way to do what they love!

The large prairie points around the center panel can be unbuttoned to reveal things Little Red Riding Hood might have seen in the forest. Be careful, you might find the wolf! (He looks a lot like a modified dog!)

A few years ago, I "revisited" the idea of Little Red Riding Hood. I used the same pattern I had drafted for the first figure of Little Red, but changed the colors and did not put large prairie points in. The finished quilt looks completely different! One thing I did not change is the "hidden" wolf in the background. Can you see him?

A Sweet New Seamstress!

Yes, I'm still around! I'm doing my part as a grandmother and loving every minute of it! (Even though my 5 year old grandson says, "Oh, no! You're going to do that sewing stuff again!" if I even walk past the sewing room.)
The picture here is of my 10 year old granddaughter and the dress she made! She has sewn several times before with me, but never a dress! The little sweater was purchased (and the shoes are mine!!!!!She's growing up too quickly!)

I watched her swell with pride every time someone commented on her dress. Another girl about her age stopped her in a restaurant and told her she loved her dress. That meant so much to her. Her efforts were validated! We all need that, don't we? 

                              

 

My Recent Vacation

 

We have recently returned from spending a little over a week driving from the northern valley in California to our home in south Texas. We toured four national parks along with a few other tourist stops along the way. Along with us were my two grandchildren, aged 5 and 10. First stop was Zion National Park in Utah. We hiked a total of 4 miles (down to the canyon floor and back).

The shuttle bus was the best place my grandson found to nap! He was "tuckered out"!

The next day we drove to Bryce Canyon National Park, where we felt like we had entered another world! 

This is a very tired and sick Nana (I had a summer cold and felt pretty lousy. I normally look about 30 years younger and 50 lbs. slimmer! - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

 

We made a couple of stops before the next photos, but here we are at the Grand Canyon National Park. This first day here, the canyon was clouded by a haze from the California wildfires!

 My new computer has arrived and now I have to learn how to use it! It's a touch screen and does not work the way my old computer did. UGH! I know I'll enjoy it when I learn, but I still have the grandkids with me and finding time to just sit at the computer is not on the radar for a little while now. The 5 year old is really put out with me for spending time doing this instead of entertaining him this morning!
