My Day for In Your Words!

I've been "chomping at the bits" (a good old Texas term) to show you my projects for this blog hop. Finally, it's time!
I have three wordy projects to show you. They all have a deeper meaning than what you see right off.
First,
Words are applied with a paint pen and then quilting is around each individual letter.
Hand applique. Fabric is from Amanda Murphy's Swiss Chocolate line from Robert Kaufman as well as scraps from my stash. Little glass beads form the sugar crystals on and around the spoon and sugar bowl.

Every day at 4:00, I go to my parent's house for coffee. My brother and sister, nieces, nephews and spouses join us. We all go straight to the coffee pot when we walk in and then join everyone around the large table that my daddy made years ago. (He also made the chairs!) Because my brother-in-law is a peanut farmer, there is usually a big bowl of unshelled peanuts on the table as a snack. Sometimes it's joined by freshly baked bread, sliced fruit, crackers and cheese, or whatever the snack of the day might be. We stay about an hour catching up on the latest news and just being a family. We tend to claim the same coffee mug every day. (Creatures of habit, you know!) Family is very important to us all!
Fabric is from Amanda Murphy's "Bella" for Blend Fabrics, excluding a few scraps from my stash. Wording is applied with a paint pen and quilting is done around each letter.
Next up is a quote by Abraham Lincoln - "Whatever you are, be a good one." I still have an image of one of my sons coming home in second grade in tears. He looked up at me with a big tear running down his little face and said, "I was going to be the very best today but I just wasn't!" We had a good talk about trying every day to be the "very best", but not expecting success EVERY time! I need to tell myself the same thing over and over.
Words are hand applique with all raw edges turned. Additional words are quilted in the background.
Last is the most personal. I want to GROW this year. Quilted in the background are the words "Spiritually, Mentally, and Professionally." You're never too old to learn and grow in many ways. I don't plan on ever stopping!
I have a giveaway! I will send you a PDF version of your choice of any one pattern from my Craftsy store if you are the winner. (The patterns for the wall hangings above will be added soon and are also eligible.) So leave your comment for a chance to win and follow for a second chance (or let me know you already follow). I will announce a winner on Friday, January 18. Giveaway is now closed. (The pattern for It's Coffee Time is now available in my Craftsy shop.)

Tomorrow is the last day of the blog hop, so be sure you come back then. Today's blogs on the hop are:

    ReplyDelete
  24. How wonderful to have your family so close by and that you are meeting every day for coffee! That sounds like a lovely thing to do, especially since I live so far away from my family (except for my immediate family that is). I love all your wall hangings with words, but the Coffee time is my favorite! It probably also has to do with the fact, that I love coffee ;).

  36. Beautiful projects -- and what a wonderful family custom! I would love being able to gather with mine every day!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Linda, once again you 'bow me away' wit your ingenuity, creativity, and skill. I was especially take with the first of your projects. I enjoy a cup of coffee at 4:00 every day, as well, a habit developed in a similar way when my mom was alive. Now, when a family member just wants to talk (on the phone), they will wait until it's time for a 4:00 cup of coffee, and we will have our visit. The miles between us forgotten for just those few minutes as we enjoy our 4:00 cup of coffee!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Your 3 projects are awesome! But what is more awesome is that 4:00 meet with your family! I moved 650 miles away from my family in 2003 and I miss mine... My sisters and I used to get together every friday at each others houses for lunch. MISS that so much!

    ReplyDelete
  39. That is awesome that your family gets together daily. I had to raise my kids far away from any relatives, as do many people these days, and it just made it so hard. Different. Friends become family, but it's just not the same. LOVE your coffee quilt, especially the sugar crystals! Actually, they are all great - thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  40. As a coffee lover, I adore your coffee project, but the story that went along with it, i enjoyed even more. What a wonderful family tradition.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Linda!!!! you outdid yourself...I love each and every one of these pieces.
I have fingers and toes crossed to win...lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. What beautiful work you do! I'm not a coffee drinker (a sin since I'm a Swede!!) - but I do love your project! Everything you shared with us is absolutely wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  43. As always the cream rises to the top. You can only guess which is my favourite however all of them have significant impact. Coffee time is such a delightful ritual and with family- even more touching. Your heart no doubt was poured into each piece. Such a perky post lol ( to be read at 4pm, would be sweeter lol).

    ReplyDelete
  44. Linda, your work is beautiful and inspiring. Love the back stories. It's so great that your family is so close and that you see them so regularly.
    Thanks for everything.

    ReplyDelete
  45. ahhhh another artist in love with paint and fabric! :) At first glance my favorite part is your 'chrystalized' sugar...then upon reading more...your delightful tradition of afternoon coffee and family gathering. Oh that all families could enjoy such togetherness...I do think the world would be a more loving place! I'm not a coffee drinker but ... I can throw the kettle on and share pots of tea and cocoa.

    ReplyDelete

  56. Oh, I love the coffee time quilt and the story behind it. You did an amazing job with the little details and unique touches. It must be so wonderful to have that family time together.

I've never seen that quote by Abraham Lincoln, but it's a good one. Is that ribbon on the bottom? I really like that effect.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I always love looking at your beautiful work. These 3 are no exceptions. Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful! My parents lived down the lane from me, and we used to always pop in for coffee in the evening, as well--sisters, aunts, in-laws. Family is so very important. I love the stories behind your wall hangings. I love your fabric. So inspiring!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Linda, I follow your site and always enjoy seeing your projects.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I already follow you by email. Love your tuts!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Wow! Words will not describe how your post made me feel. First I love all of your projects and I hope I get to win one of them! The story of popping over to your family and having coffee so warmed my heart. I am alone now, all my family is gone and we never lived close enough to have those kind of visits. Oh how I wish we could have. I guess I use the LQS for that purpose. I drop by every evening and have tea or coffee with whoever is there. We share our projects, our woes and our happy moments. They are my family now. The quote by Abraham Lincoln is very moving. Need to remember that one. But the "Grow" is maybe my favorite one. It reminds me of a tree....which is on my bucket list...I love trees. Roots that go deep into the ground, a good sturdy trunk and branches that reach up to the sky, asking God to hold on to us. These are so inspiring and I thank you for sharing them with us and for leading a hop that has touched me in so many ways. God Bless You.

  81. Oh, Linda. The Coffee Time quilt and the story that goes with it just made my heart sing. It reminds me of lunch at my Grandmother's house. She never knew which or how many of her kids and grandkids would be there. But, I never remember her not having enough for everyone to eat. Thanks for the memory and be well. Lane

  89. WHat a wonderful treasure to be able to visit with everyone every day. Love all your words, especially the Lincoln wall hanging.

    ReplyDelete
  90. These are all beautiful projects. My favorite is probably the Lincoln quote. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Linda, I love all of your projects. Thank-you so much for sharing your talents, creativity and splendid ideas with all of us. But, most of all thank you for sharing the stories of your family and time spent with them. My favorite had been about the grandkids decorating the christmas tree, and the "one of these things is not like the other", but now it is the coffee time story. I, like most, do not live close enough to my family to see them on a daily basis, but we try to get together at least monthly. I am a "new" quilter and love all of your projects. I am an SLP working in a school district, specifically with the preschool population, so I am trying to get brave enough to tackle the projects you have like "The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" or "Old MacDonald" to hang in my preschool room. When I do, believe me I will be contacting you to get tips and help. And, as an SLP, I thoroughly have loved the WORDS blog hop you cheered us on to follow....afterall, words are my business. Ha Ha. I will be attempting some of the simple projects I found in this hop to hang in my office. Thank you for the opportunity to win one of your patterns, and thanks again for all you share.

  95. your projects are wonderful and the story about your family is very touching. my father's family had a tradition to do soemthing similar a few times a week and it was a great thing to be a part of but as the family grows and the parent's passed away thoes times are only a memory now.

  104. Linda, I keep telling you your blog is one of my top 3 favorites and today you have shown once again why I love to visit you. Your family coffee time is simply precious and I only wish I could do the same. Having your parents at your age is a true blessing. I felt love as I read each story but my favorite is your little boy's comment. How precious, and the quilt hanging brings it all back to life. Simply wonderful and inspirational. I thoroughly enjoyed your post and creations today!! I've already won regardless if I win the give-away or not. You are a real treasure.

  105. You do such beautiful work. My husband was looking over my shoulder when your blog came up. He also agreed, "Coffee Time" is perfect. Beautiful colored fabric, just perfect. Thank you.

  106. I have to ask: HOW do all the adults manage to be able to gather for coffee at 4pm every day? I think that's just wonderful & wonder how you all accomplish this feat!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I stop everything and drive 4 miles to be there. My sister comes in about 4:20 because she has been at school. (She lives within 1/2 mile.) My brother and his wife come in about 4:30 or so, when they get off work. He lives within a mile. My niece comes over with her twins because she is anxious to get out of the house!!! (Sometimes she’s early!!)She lives within a mile. My other niece stops in after picking the kids up from school because she passes by on the way home, about 2 miles. So, you see, it is quite doable. We are all out in the country, so we don’t have a lot of traffic to contend with. My parents start watching for us and call if we’re running late. My husband rarely makes it since he works so far from home and doesn’t get off in time, but when he can, he stops by on the way home.

(Your emails are bouncing back as undeliverable, so hopefully, you'll see my answer here!)

  110. I love your coffee wall hanging and other pieces. More importantly, I love the story behind the Coffee Time quilt. When I was growing up, my grandmother lived a few miles away. I loved being able to drop by when I was in college, just blocks away from her. She always had a sandwich or cookies that I could snack on. I lost my mother 3 days after Christmas and miss my daily visits with her as she declined. At 92, she had shared so much with her children and grandchildren, but she shared her love and expertise of sewing with only me. I thank her for all that she taught me.

  111. I love your Coffee wall hanging - the extra details make it so adorable. But I must say having the Abe Lincoln's saying on your wall would be so encouraging. I might need to make that for my grandchildren. I like the strips that hang from it - so snazzy.

  132. Linda I'm totally amazed at these beautiful pieces. And totally jealous that every day you get to spend an hour with your parents and siblings. What a wonderful blessing that is....I can't even imagine the treasures you are storing up in your heart. If I were to be lucky enough to win I would love the coffee pattern. I don't drink it (I'm a chai tea girl) but I love your piece. blessings, marlene

  138. OM Goodness!! You are so creative that it blows my mind! Loved your story about coffee time and thought the wall hanging was just toooo cool - esp. the beading. Then Abe's quilt is perfect and I loved that it was not symmetrical and the fringe on the bottom so cute. Grow is a lovely word and the quilt is perfect! I am awed!

  151. You and your family are so blessed to be able to gather each day around the coffee pot. It makes me think of Sunday dinner when I was growing up. My grandmothers came, my brothers home from college/work, my sister and her family. My parents are gone and my siblings live too far away but we try to see each other when we can.

  153. You are so very fortunate to be able to spend time with your family on a daily basis. Love the all of the quilts, but I think the second one with Abe Lincoln's quote hits home with my son. Such a great quote, maybe I will make a small painted version of this saying for my son's roon. And "Grow", I want and am doing so this very moment. Thanks for sharing.

THANK YOU for everything!

  157. Oh, I love the COFFEE one and the story of coffee at 4:00 every day. What a wonderful family you have. Gathering each day reminds me of summers spent on my grandparent's farm. Good times!

I like the other projects too but the COFFEE is outstanding.
