Finished Granny Square Quilt

Quilting and binding is finished on my Granny Square quilt. It shrunk down quite a bit after washing (almost 10"!!!!), but is still a nice 52" square (from 60") - but is still just right for cuddling under. I love the way it feels. It's soft and just heavy enough to really feel substantial. I would have loved to drape it over one of those old fashioned metal cribs, but I don't know of anyone who has one! (I think I need one as a prop!)
I quilted around all the squares and inside every other one, to give a quilted "checkerboard" appearance. Yes, I used stippling, which I know the quilt police say is overdone and passe,  but I love the antique look it gives and that is what I was going for. (I don't much care for anyone telling me what IS and IS NOT okay with quilting. Who do they think they are? There are enough rules out there already without coming up with more!  I picture them clicking their tongues and shaking their heads. These are the same people who tell you that wearing white shoes after Labor Day or before Easter is taboo. It's YOUR quilt! Enjoy and express yourself unless you're quilting for someone else or entering it in a judged show - in which case the quilt police rule! I'm smiling as I write this, but I do mean it!

Until next time......

  2. My favorite part about your new granny square quilt is all the borders which frame it into a gorgeous quilt:) Stippling may have been done a lot,but everyone has their own style, size of stippling so no two quilts come out the same anyway! So take that quilt police! hehehehe

  7. It is precious photo'd with the dolly, who needs an old crib? I love your stippling quilting, the stitches give just the right crinkle. Good idea to quilt every other block, too.
I'm with you, I follow what my heart dictates in the completion of an art project, good job, Linda!

  8. Love your quilt, Linda! As for the "rules", I'm with you. I break most of them :-) and I'm not what is considered a "modern" quilter....

  9. Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous. I can't believe how much it shrunk but at least it's still a usable size. I totally agree with you about the 'quilt police'. And I am one that wears white shoes all year long :)

  11. That is beautiful Linda! I love the old comfy feel the quilt has to it after you quilted and washed it. I know some people don't like that crinkly look of a quilt having been washed, but I think in some quilts, especially those done with an old traditional pattern, it makes it look even better when you wash it. The colors too are so nice, but I do love pinks. As for rules, I break them all at some time or another, lol.

  12. I love how you've done yours, with the sweet print in the sashings and outer squares on the grannies. Very nice effect. Adore all the flange work. And the stippling is PERFECT for this quilt, so who cares what Uptighters might say? (They all need a chill pill - wink, wink) Whoop, Whoop!

  23. I agree Linda... you put all the work into this quilt... you can decide what you think looks best in the quilting department too! For what it's worth... I like stippling too... and use it a lot! We are two of a kind!!!! :)

  25. I so agree about the quilt police. If it's your quilt, you should do what you want, not what some so-called (and often self-proclaimed) expert says is the right thing. That's a lovely quilt, and before I read about how you quilted I was enlarging the photos to look more closely.

  26. I absolutely love this quilt in all of it's crinkly perfection. The flanges around the blocks really look wonderful. I think the stippling works beautifully with this quilt. Of course,I didn't know stippling was out. Wouldn't you know, I haven't even mastered it yet. The fashion police in your neighborhood must have been a lot more liberal than in mine. The rule when I was growing up dictated that you could only wear white shoes between Memorial Day and Labor Day. At that rate, you could never wear them out before they went out of style.

  27. Oh your quilt is just beautiful! Quilts with white/off white as the sashing or main are still my all time favorites!

  29. Linda, how beautiful and I love the photo with the little doll! I'm like you, stipple quilting is still my favorite was to quilt, love the old look of it. I am trying a few new ways to quilt especially if I want something with a bigger type of quilting but stippling is here to stay!

  31. Your quilt is beautiful and looks so soft and great for cuddling! I agree that we should make quilts that please ourselves or the person we are giving them to!

  32. Love that you quilted the squares, outlined the finished granny square, the sashing and binding is perfect. The patchwork & quilting is wonderful.
I think this question comes from an American TV show (could be Mary Tyler Moore, The Brady Bunch, whatever..) what is this "rule" presumably not legislated about WHITE shoes? What happens to your feet or the shoes if worn? I am from Oz so don't know what it is or when are these Public Holidays.

I'm sure I have committed it unaware of this social solecism....What a hoot!!!

I have tried other free motion styles and stippling is my favorite. I love the sashing and borders around the sashing. And those tiny borders around the blocks, love those!
